The nucleus of the ancient city was the small island ofOrtygia. The settlers found the land fertile and the native tribes to be reasonably well-disposed to their presence. After the end of the conflict Dionysius built a massive fortress on the Ortygia island of the city and 22 km-long walls around all of Syracuse.
